We may have several different and acceptable reasons for having children.  I personally think that children should be the result of a lifetime commitment to love and responsibility.  Nevertheless, often we have children first and then, we think.
In any case children always come with responsibilities that should not be overlooked – a lot of them – since parents must provide, protect and instruct them.  I think marriage provides the ideal framework to assume those easily.  That is the real issue about having children:  a parent or would-be parent to ask:  what is the price of children?  Am I  willing to pay that price?  If a parent is willing to pay the price of having children, the return is tremendously rewarding.  In the contrary, if a parent can not pay the price for children and have chosen to have them, the lifetime consequences will be unbearable for both parent and child.
